Advantages and Logistics of Online Counselling.
During Covid, like other therapists who continued to work with clients, I was forced to work online rather than in person. Previously, it had been a service I offered only to individuals who found office visits difficult due to circumstances beyond their control. Now, however, post-Covid, I prefer to always use this modality.
The majority of clients enjoy working via video, but some clients prefer simply using the telephone. Please be aware that not all treatments can be carried out using the latter (e.g., EMDR), but I try to accommodate clients so that everyone feels comfortable.
Online counselling offers several advantages. Firstly, it provides accessibility and convenience, allowing individuals to receive therapy from the comfort of their own homes, which is particularly beneficial for those with mobility issues, busy schedules, or living in remote areas. It also offers greater flexibility in scheduling, as clients can often find appointment times outside of traditional office hours.
The online format can reduce the stigma associated with seeking mental health support, as it offers a level of anonymity and privacy. Additionally, online counselling can often be more cost-effective, eliminating the need for travel expenses.
Once I receive a referral or a client contacts me, we set up a virtual meeting for a specific time and date. The night before that session, I email the client as a reminder with the link that they will use the next day. If clients want to postpone or cancel their appointment and inform me of this the night before, there is no fee; however, cancellations on the day of the session result in a 10% charge.
Sessions are 50 minutes long, and with brief therapy, clients generally attend six weekly sessions. As an R.C.C., Registered Clinical Counsellor, I ask clients to check with their insurance company to see if they are covered for my counselling services. If so, they can pay me directly through an e-transfer, and a receipt is then issued by email for clients to submit their claim.
