Creating a safe and supportive environment where all family members feel heard and respected.
Read MoreIn family counselling, I generally begin by creating a safe and supportive environment where all family members feel heard and respected. This involves establishing clear ground rules for communication, ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to speak without interruption, and it fosters a sense of mutual respect. I gather information about the family's dynamics, history, and the specific issues they are facing. Through active listening and empathy, I help the family members express their thoughts and feelings, identify underlying problems, and understand each other's perspectives. This process helps to build trust and encourages more open and honest communication within the family.
As therapy progresses, I employ various techniques and interventions tailored to the family's unique needs. These may include role-playing exercises, communication skills training, conflict resolution strategies, and problem-solving tasks. I guide the family in recognizing and altering dysfunctional patterns of behaviour, improving their interactions, and developing healthier ways of relating to one another. By addressing issues such as power imbalances, unresolved conflicts, and ineffective communication, I help the family build stronger relationships and enhance their overall functioning. Ultimately, the goal of family counselling is to promote understanding, healing, and cohesion, enabling the family to navigate challenges more effectively and create a more supportive and harmonious home environment.
Therapy is experiential. Love, sex, intimacy, anger, interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution , separation and divorce are all addressed.
I believe that we each have the internal resources we need to cope successfully and grow, and that therapy needs to focus on health and possibilities.
